Math Pathways

All incoming 6th grade students at RSAR will take 6th+ math. As students progress through middle school, they will have two math pathway options.

At the beginning of the 4th quarter of 6th grade, we will provide families with the student's grades, SBA scores, and our recommendation for 7th graders for 7th+ Math or Algebra 1 in order to support students and families in making a choice.

  • The 7th+ mathematics course is rigorous and challenging. It focuses on pre-algebra skills and standards. Students on this pathway will move through a sequence of advanced math courses in high school.
  • Algebra 1 is a rigorous, high school level course. Students taking Algebra 1 in 7th grade are skipping almost two years of math instruction.

As students finish 7th grade, there are two math options that are informed by their previous class:

  • Algebra 1 is a rigorous, high school level course for students who have completed 7th+ math. For details, please refer to the math course descriptions below.
  • Geometry is a high school level course for students who have successfully completed Algebra 1.

This diagram helps to illustrate how the math pathway in middle school leads to math courses in high school. It is important to check your high school course catalog for additional math courses offered and any prerequisites listed for course enrollment. Course catalogs are available on each high school’s website.
